An authorization only helps if you can find a suitable provider. An organized search helps you compare openings without repeating the whole story.
Prepare a short inquiry
Describe the authorized service, preferred area, available times, and whether you need a particular language. Ask whether the provider accepts your authorization before sharing detailed records. Use the official NYCPS independent-provider information as a starting point rather than assuming every private therapist participates.
Ask what a yes includes
Ask who would actually deliver the service, when they could start, and where sessions would occur. Check whether the arrangement fits the authorization and what approvals are still needed. Check whether the appointment is an intake or an approved first session. Ask how cancellations and progress updates are handled.
Document an unsuccessful search
If a provider is full or can't accept the authorization, note the date and reason. Share a concise search summary with the school or CSE and ask for further assistance. Keep searching and requesting updates without assuming that a waiting list resolves the missed-service question. If the delay continues, discuss your options with a qualified advocate or attorney.
Your next-step checklist
- Ask about your exact authorization.
- Confirm provider, location, and start date.
- Keep declined inquiries and follow-up requests.
