Records show what the school says happened. They often confirm the gaps you remember.
What to ask for
- All IEPs and evaluations
- Related service and SETSS session logs or encounter records
- Attendance records
- Progress reports and report cards
- Any letters about services that could not be staffed
How to ask
Put the request in writing to the principal, and send it by email so you have a dated record. Federal privacy law (FERPA) gives parents the right to inspect their child's education records and requires schools to respond within 45 days, and many respond sooner.
Keep everything
Save every reply and every attachment in one folder. You'll need them later.
