Resolution meetings and mediation

Many cases end with an agreement rather than a hearing.

The resolution meeting

Under federal law the district generally holds a meeting with the parent soon after a complaint is filed, to try to resolve it. Parents and the district can agree in writing to skip it, or to use mediation instead.

Mediation

Mediation is voluntary. A neutral mediator helps both sides reach an agreement. The agreement is written down and signed.

Settlements

A settlement may grant tutoring hours, set a rate and a deadline, and say how a provider is paid. Read every term before signing. How to read the terms.
