Understanding the IEP

Every compensatory claim starts with one question: what did the IEP promise? Look in these parts of the IEP.

The recommendations page

Look for the list of recommended programs and services. For each one, note four things: the service (for example speech-language therapy or SETSS), how often (such as 3 times a week), how long each session lasts (such as 30 minutes), and whether it's individual or in a group.

Turn it into hours

Multiply it out. Three 30-minute sessions a week is 1.5 hours a week; over a 40-week school year that's about 60 hours. Use this figure to measure what was missed.

Dates matter

IEPs change. Note the date each IEP took effect so you compare each stretch of time to the IEP that applied then.

Questions families ask

What if the IEP is out of date?

You can ask the school for a new IEP meeting at any time. Missed services are still measured against the IEP that was in effect.
